Democratic Governor Candidate Crotty Urges Reconsideration of Sales Tax Holiday Proposal

(PRLEAP.COM) Orlando, FL – Democratic Governor hopeful John Crotty urges the House to rethink Bill #691, which was filed on January 12. It would establish a one-week sales tax holiday on virtually all taxable items and would be the largest single tax cut in Florida history.

The sales tax exemption, with an estimated fiscal impact of approximately $500 million, would apply to the sales price of anything purchased by an individual for personal use and would include such items as clothing, furniture, televisions, electronic equipment, computers, vehicles and numerous other items. There would be a $5,000 cap per item.

Republicans are pushing the bill to alleviate the projected $3.2 billion tax surplus Florida now faces, due largely to increased real estate values, population growth, and hurricane rebuilding efforts. Governor Bush has also proposed a property tax cut as another method for reducing the budget surplus.

Crotty disagrees with the idea of a week-long sales tax holiday and property tax cut proposals to eliminate the projected budget surplus. Crotty says, “The projected surplus of over $3.2 billion gives the state an opportunity to invest the surplus in our future by providing more funding for education and land preservation.”

Instead, Crotty feels Florida would be better served by allocating the $3.2 billion surplus in the following manner:

$2 billion for supplemental education funding—for school construction, hiring teachers—to meet the requirements set forth in the class size amendment to the Florida Constitution.

$1 billion to the “Florida Forever” program to purchase environmentally sensitive lands.

$200 million to programs that provide services to the homeless and for programs that provide health care services to low-income women and infants/children.

While tax holidays and tax cuts are politically popular, John Crotty believes “public policy is better served by allocating the budget surplus funds to education, land preservation and assistance for the most needy in our state. The additional funding for education and land preservation are investments which will benefit all Floridians for years to come.”
