DATELINE: BRAINTREE, MA… South Shore Elder Services of Braintree, providing seniors and caregivers throughout the South Shore area with valuable resources and services, has recently donated caregiving books to the main libraries of the 11 towns the agency serves.

As part of the Family Caregiver Support Program of the Elder Care Network Southeast, South Shore Elder Services has donated two books, The Thirty Six Hour Day by Nancy L. Mace, M.A. and Peter V. Rabins, M.D, and Caregiving at Home by William Leahy, M. D. The books provide valuable information and guidance to caregivers on all aspects of care planning such as how to provide in-home day to day care, long-distance caregiving, part-time caregiving and caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This is the second year that South Shore Elder Services has made donations to local libraries in support of caregivers who help seniors remain independent and living at home.

Area libraries that received the books are: Milton Public Library; Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy; Hull Public Library; Hingham Public Library; Norwell Public Library; Thayer Public Library in Braintree; Holbrook Public Library; Scituate Town Library; Turner Free Library in Randolph; Paul Pratt Memorial Library in Cohasset and Fogg Library in Weymouth.

According to the National Family Caregiver Association, 54 million people spend 18-20 hours a week caregiving. Caregivers juggle family commitments, work responsibilities and caregiving on a daily basis. Stress, worry and lack of time are constant challenges for the caregiver and typically the caregiver’s health, rest and relaxation needs are pushed aside. Respite from daily responsibilities is the number one need for family caregivers, but oftentimes families often can not afford the cost of respite services and need to rely on neighbors and friends to help. The books donated by South Shore Elder Services provide caregivers with insight to managing caregiving.
