Shopping Online… for a Plastic Surgeon

December 11, 2004 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
New York, NY — "I found it on the internet,' is a common refrain nowadays for sourcing the hard-to-find as well as the everyday. Not surprisingly, more people are shopping for a plastic surgeon online.

"It's about control, choice and convenience,' says Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, a facial plastic surgeon in New York City and New Jersey (www.facechange.org). The internet allows people to choose when to shop, how long to shop as well as how much time to ‘spend with each doctor.' "Patients get to study at their own pace and get comfortable with the information. It's an efficient way to get educated.' Dr. Slupchynskyj says that most of his patients who were web referrals have spent well over a year researching procedures and potential surgeons via the nternet. "Unquestionably, patients coming in for an initial interview are increasingly knowledgeable because of time spent reviewing websites.'

Just as for other services and goods sourced online, the internet also provides lots of choices; plus, comparison shopping is made easier. It's useful for toggling back and forth between sites to compare photos and other information.

Another aspect of the growth in online shopping for cosmetic surgery is the privacy factor. Despite all the talk about cosmetic surgery, many patients prefer to keep this a private matter. The internet enables them to keep control of this.

Prospective patients should look at credentials, "before and after' pictures and the general appearance of the website. Set aside fancy graphics and closely study the photos. Compare matching profiles. Make certain the "after' angle is the same as the'before.' Lighting and make-up should also be the same. Note hairstyles and fashions; dated styles indicate past successes, not necessarily current work. Lastly, determine whether the doctor has a specialty. The photos displayed should support this.

Shopping for a cosmetic surgeon online hasn't replaced a personal interview. "It's just the homework in advance,' says Dr. Slupchynskyj. Nor does it mean that personal referrals are a thing of the past. However, there are regional differences in how much people want to share the fact they've had surgery, according to Robin Bogner Ntoh, a consultant to physicians across the country. Women in some cities flaunt their surgical makeovers, while elsewhere they like to keep cosmetic procedures to themselves. "People are more private in New York,' she says. "Partly as a result of this, New Yorkers are at the forefront of shopping for their facelift online.'

Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj is a double board certified surgeon specializing in facial contouring and rejuvenation. He is director of the Aesthetic Institute of New York at 44 East 65th Street in New York City. He also has offices in Livingston and Lyndhurst, New Jersey. His website address is http://www.facechange.org.
