According to GDM Consulting, Preschoolers May Be Your Best Business Coaches

OK, maybe this cannot be taken literally. But the simplicity and innocence of the preschooler constantly asking “Why?” has a lot to do with modern business. According to GDM Consulting CEO Gary Markin one of the most common mistakes businesses make is not fully understanding the driving force behind an action. Put simply, when evaluating whether or not to perform a task, Markin says “Keep asking yourself ‘why’. You should eventually come up with an answer that ties to your corporate values, your corporate mission, or your strategic objectives. If you do not come back to one of those you probably should not move forward.” Interestingly, Markin believes that companies spend a great deal of time and effort excelling at tasks which only have minimal impact on real results.

Obviously, this all assumes that you have effective value, mission and objective statements. And creating them can be pretty tough. So Markin has created a consultancy practice to get you there. While GDM offers a broad range of strategic consulting services, their focus is highly differentiated. Markin believes that the most valuable offerings to his clients are in the areas of Strategic Relationship Management and Corporate Alignment. Being effective in these areas, he implies, makes the links between action and desired results more apparent.

Markin also believes that executives often miss opportunities because the link to the core goals is not apparent. Markin offers “While ‘why’ is a great question, ‘why not’ is equally powerful.” Maybe we can all learn some lessons from the children - as we have heard many times, they are the future.
