Having Czechoslovakian heritage, Jana (pronounced “Yana”) has a rich and varied background in Old World European art. From childhood, Jana studied under modern classically trained Czech artists and by her teens was painting progressive murals throughout British Columbia, Canada. Jana lived in Vancouver and Whistler for many years until finally leaving Canada to live in San Jose, Cambrian District, near Los Gatos, to be near California’s world-renowned wine country.
Her paintings are created mainly with acrylic or watercolor media and are noted not just for their vibrant colors and unique textures, created by palette knife, but for their vivacious and impressionistic styles. Jana chooses surprisingly rudimentary wine-related subjects for her paintings, such as wine glasses, grapes, vintners’ barrels, wine bottles, naturally wandering vines, and many other items that capture the essence of popular wine culture.
Jana notes major influences from Canadian painter Emily Carr and Czech painter, Václav Špála, as well as the works of the Surrealist master, Salvador Dali. Jana’s paintings are suitable for dining rooms, kitchens, wine cellars; tasting rooms wine bars and restaurants just about anywhere a vivid portrait of the wine industry would warm the heart of a wine-lover. The paintings come in various sizes and styles. Jana’s unique painting style of using mostly a palette knife can be seen in this collection and displays the bold impressions and passionate hues for which she is best known.
The pieces will be displayed at Testarossa Vineyard Winery through the months of February to May
