Richmond, VA – Internationally published author and columnist Paul Spicer has released The Therapeutic Value of Creative Writing, Venture Publishing 2005.

Spicer says that creative writing has the ability to engage, energize, lighten, and enlighten far beyond the boundaries of physical and mental disabilities. This awareness has prompted him over the past five years to lead writing workshops for the disabled, helping writers from Central Virginia with disabilities publish their own works in various magazines as well as in a groundbreaking series of annual poetry books written by people with disabilities, entitled Life’s Creations.

As an outgrowth of his work with the disabled population, Spicer created his own publication, The Therapeutic Value of Creative Writing. The book highlights the many writing activities and exercises one can perform, no matter their ability level, to increase self-awareness and exploration.

Spicer feels that writers with, and without disabilities, can benefit from the book, his second published work this year.

“These publications and workshops are not produced to emphasis a particular disability, but rather the unique characteristics that make up the personality of the writer,” he explains. In Spicer’s book, writers are prompted to take part in a series of writing exercises that focus on self-discovery. Readers are encouraged to share and write in their thoughts, feelings, and goals on the actual pages on the book. The same holds true with the lively workshops held in schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
