New internet site maps locations of local sex offenders
BOSTON, MA, A new internet site, developed as a public service by a local web development company, allows users to identify more than 250,000 registered sex offenders by location, using a sophisticated mapping interface that provides addresses along with names, photos, and arrest records. The free site is supported by public donations and advertising.
The Sex Offender Registry www.thesexoffender.com differs from state and federal registries on the Internet. Distinguishing features of the site are:
Ability to enter a home address and have access to a location map including all sex offenders living within 5, 10, 15 or 20 miles. Clicking on the created flags takes the user to a photograph of the offender and pertinent information
Unlike other sex offender registries this site allows searching by zip code or town. Because of this, if you live on a border of another town or state, you wouldn’t know if a sex offender lived near you. The Sex Offender Registry will show you all of the registered sex offenders living near you regardless of geographic borders.
The Sex Offender Registry handles out-of-state offenders. The Sex Offender Registry contains many examples of the shortcomings of the state registration system. Their database contains offenders that registered in their offending state but did not register in their state of residence because the laws of their state of residence did not require them to do so. Because of this, using your state registry, you wouldn’t know if there was a sex offender living next door. The Sex Offender Registry will display sex offenders in your state that may have been convicted in another state. That person may be your neighbor.
