NSI Software Customer Covanta Energy Corporation Realizes Cost Savings and Simplifies Regulatory Compliance with Data Protection Solution

December 10, 2003 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Hoboken, N.J. — NSI(r) Software, Inc. (NSI) today announced Covanta Energy Corporation, an independent developer and operator of power generation facilities worldwide, saved $200,000 by deploying NSI's Double-Take(r) replication software to protect its critical facility data. Covanta's deployment centralizes backup and adds disaster recovery capabilities for its 30 remote facilities, eliminating the need for tape
backup and IT support at its power plants.

Covanta set out to implement a data protection and storage solution that provided easier management and access to their critical data from facilities and emissions monitoring in order to comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. However, at the time of the project, Covanta was faced with severe budget constraints that limited what IT could spend on the necessary storage systems upgrade.

After extensive research, Covanta selected Double-Take from NSI Software to build a centralized backup and disaster recovery solution. Covanta uses Double-Take to replicate monitoring and plant data from its 30 sites throughout the United States, including Hawaii, back to IBM X-Series servers at Covanta's centralized data centers in New Jersey. This approach makes it easier and faster for Covanta's staff to access information essential for monitoring emissions and complying with EPA regulations.

"Our new data protection and storage system based on NSI Software and IBM delivered the right functionality at the right cost, making it easy for us to justify the investment," said Bill Crowley, CIO and vice president of MIS, at Covanta. "The centralized backup method lets us do more with less, by cutting management and personnel costs and providing faster recovery times."

After completing training and pilot installations at two sites, Covanta deployed the NSI solution at the remaining 28 sites in less than one month, extending data protection and failover capabilities to a total of 41 servers with a terabyte and a half of stored data. Now Covanta's system replicates 30 megabytes of new "delta" data from each site daily. The deployment also eliminates the need for local IT resources at each facility, and reduces the overall cost of ownership of their storage systems, as well as the costs associated with managing, replacing and repairing tape drives.

"Centralized backup is spreading as more companies realize the benefits it provides, not only in hardware cost reductions, but also in reducing operational expenditures, ease of management and regulatory compliance," said Bob Guilbert, vice president of marketing and business development for NSI Software. "Covanta's approach is an exemplary, intelligent way of dealing with the reality of reduced staff and budgets and rising volumes of storage, regulation and disruptive threats that IT departments are facing today."
