Microsoft SharePoint® Case Study Highlights the FAA’s Collaboration with Boeing on the 777

Microsoft Corporation recently published a case study discussing the adoption and use of SharePoint technology by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA’s extraordinarily successful implementation of the SharePoint technology, the Knowledge Services Network (KSN), is based on knowledge management principles and collaborative technology adoption best practices. The FAA has been assisted by the Applied Knowledge Group, Inc., www.akgroup.com (AKG) who provides services to support KSN, including technical integration, training and adoption.

The case study (http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=4381063) details the use of Windows SharePoint Services by the Aircraft Evaluation Groups (AEG) to accelerate airworthiness reviews and streamline external industry collaboration on aircraft maintenance and certification for the Boeing 777 aircraft. Lynn Pierce, FAA Aviation Safety Inspector and Maintenance Review Board Chairman for the 777 created the AEG SharePoint site and 100 associated sites with the help of the FAA’s Ronald Simmons, the leading developer of the FAA’s KSN. Pierce said “The FAA is entering a new world of knowledge management and collaboration…Once organizations start using a collaborative environment like KSN, they can never go back to paper processes.” He also added “These technologies simply make people more effective in their work…it’s correctly managing the organization’s knowledge so that everyone flies more safely.”
