"Electricity and New York City", a new book by Rob MacKay, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.Electricity is so ingrained in our daily lives that we barely think about it, until it's gone. A flip of a switch, a tap on a phone, and the lights come on. But the path to this modern convenience is a gripping tale of discovery, innovation, and ambition that spans centuries and continents.
In his new book, "Electricity and New York City", author Rob MacKay unpacks the fascinating history of how electricity was discovered, harnessed, and distributed, culminating in one of the most complex power networks in the world. From early scientific experiments involving dissected animals and flying kites, to industrial breakthroughs using salt water, copper, and coal, this book explores how an abstract force became the lifeblood of modern society.
MacKay then narrows the focus to the United States, and ultimately New York City, a densely populated, culturally diverse, and politically complicated metropolis. Here, the effort to "bring the juice" to homes and businesses shaped entire neighborhoods, fueled labor movements, improved the quality of life, and helped create a city of both millionaires and inmates.
Featuring more than 180 rarely seen images, many released from private and previously inaccessible archives, "Electricity and New York City" is both an educational journey and a visual treasure. It provides a rare insider's perspective on a force that powers our economy, sustains our lives, and defines modern comfort.
