Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO) Announces 2006 Annual Conference Keynote Speaker
Cathleen Black Of Hearst Magazines To Address Women Presidents Of Multimillion-Dollar Corporations

NEW YORK – Cathleen Black, president of Hearst Magazines, a division of The Hearst Corporation, one of the largest diversified communications companies, will give a keynote speech on April 28 at The Women Presidents’ Organization’s (WPO) 2006 Annual Conference, to be held on April 27 – 29 at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago. The conference encourages WPO members to share business strategies and experience with other successful women from all over North America, as well as learn from interactive seminars and speakers.

A Chicago native herself, Black oversees the financial performance and development of some of the industry's best-known titles: Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, SmartMoney, Town & Country and others. Under her leadership, Hearst Magazines has launched a number of titles including O, The Oprah Magazine, and CosmoGIRL!. In total, she oversees 19 consumer magazines in the United States and 145 international editions around the world. Black has been dubbed “The First Lady of American Magazines” and “one of the leading figures in American publishing over the past two decades” by the Financial Times.

Black is widely credited for the success of USA Today, where for eight years she was first president, then publisher, as well as a board member and executive vice president/marketing of Gannett, its parent company. In 1991 she became president and CEO of the Newspaper Association of America, the industry’s largest trade group, where she served for five years before joining Hearst.

“Cathleen has a vast array of expertise in an area that is crucial to women entrepreneurs,” said Marsha Firestone, Ph.D., president of the WPO. “Her contribution to our distinguished list of keynote speakers will be highly appreciated and wonderfully beneficial for our members.”
