"The Anthology of African-American Environmental History," a new book by Dr Edmund C. Merem, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.A groundbreaking new book by Dr. Edmund C. Merem, "The Anthology of African-American Environmental History," offers a comprehensive analysis of Black ecological history from the transatlantic slave trade to the modern era. Published at a critical moment in global history, this vital work fills a significant void for readers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand the deep connections between African-Americans and the natural world.
This book traces this vital narrative across centuries, beginning with early West African traditions and the brutal transition to the New World in the 1600s and 1800s. It spans diverse geographical landscapes, exploring unique regional experiences across the American South, Midwest, Southwest, and West. Through an extensive synthesis of secondary data and literature reviews, Dr. Merem weaves together central, intersectional themes that have shaped Black ecological history. Key focus areas include environmental justice, agricultural traditions, and natural resources.
Beyond ecological data, the anthology confronts the social and political threats of nativism, directly challenging contemporary attempts to diminish Black history.
