TEFL 2.0: Teaching English to create jobs and advance education online.
(PRLEAP.COM) Published April 12th, 2006. Buenos Aires, Argentina.
When TEFLocal™ opened roughly one year ago, the focus was to bring local immersion, teacher certification, and a volunteer community to travelers abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Now, that community is growing globally thanks to technology and Web 2.0 platforms such as: VOIP, Wiki, Podcasts, Ajax, and TEFL mobile™.
One of the founding members at TEFLocal, A.R.Thompson, a teacher and educational podcaster, recalls the early days of 2005, "TEFL local was designed as a play on words solution with a bigger meaning behind it… to help the local and international community fuse together," he said, "At that time, the TEFL industry was mostly composed of pure-for-profit TEFL franchises, or mills, that consume and expand as fast as economically possible." TEFLocal saw that the platform of most schools were devoid of local culture and even now in early 2006 still neglect the local community they eat their profits from. "These brokers, and aggresive web marketers are not stakeholders, they are steak eaters… no donation to NGOs or measurable causes, the TEFL world is largely comprised of cunning brokers with unethical business practices. TEFLocal works against this imperialism and feels things should be different." Enter Web 2.0, fresh thinking, and better education.
Traditionally online TEFL programs haven´t used tech savvy software, or personal touch, they were focused on marketing gimmicks and would simply email assignments back and forth for months until a student was "done", and received a TEFL certificate with no actual teaching practicum and little practical value. TEFL 2.0™ technology aims to change that.
Currently the biggest TEFL mills in the world work precisely like this. Type Online TEFL in a search engine or TEFL online and more than likely you will get a few familiar coporations that both work hard at feeding the public disinformation with panacea marketing campaigns.
TEFLocal has received letters of malcontent from two of these English heavyweights both unwilling to advance education and alter their pure-for-profit business models. The solicitations ironically had spelling mistakes which were all promptly sent to a leading university, now being used as an active case study. "When you change things invariably people get upset, but the bullying language of these companies proves they care little for innovation and new ideas… it’s clear these companies care more for their pocketbooks, and are trying to supress new ideas from new schools that challege the old school oligarcy."
This one small school in South America hopes an open source universe will cut ESL costs & profits with the benefit being increased global solidarity and people communicating better. "We want all the tools out there to be utilized. We are opening up communication with open source platforms, educational podcasters, and recently attended BlackBoard World 2006 in San Diego for BlackBoard Inc. just to find a smarter system to benefit people in the world of language education. When you are trading languages you are trading culture, and we feel cultural exchange is important too." TEFLocal is based on www.Localimmersion.com ideals that are integral to TEFLocal´s architecture. "Open communication is about making the world a better place and open source technology is about getting there more effectively."
Current online TEFL platforms rely heavily on marketing budgets, MS Word, Hotmail, Web 1.0 platforms, where real interaction is not a concern. TEFLocal and TEFL 2.0 are poised to take the road less traveled pioneering their own route in ESL and EFL with a unique message: build an open source community with volunteering and technology platforms like Moodle and Writely and everybody wins. This maverick methodology is so far TEFLocal´s own in the wild west world of TEFL and TESOL.
