Stress is a serious problem for both business and individuals. Research by the UK Health and Safety Executive has warned that going home after a hard day’s work with your jaw clenched and your shoulders rock solid means you’re 25% more likely to suffer from a heart attack and have a 50% greater chance of dropping dead from a stroke. Bouncing back from setbacks and maintaining a positive mental attitude is an advantage most of us could do with developing. Half a million people in the UK believe work-related stress is making them ill and it is estimated that UK business loses over 13 million days a year due to stress-related sickness.
Ignoring the signs of stress is dangerous and risks our health. Organisations such as the British Heart Foundation agree that stress is linked to heart disease. As well as being bad for the heart, it can lead to other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, psoriasis and migraine.
Being aware of the symptoms is the first step and seeking support to turnaround the stress response is the next.
“I decided to offer an internet based support programme when I realised that so many of my clients complained of being too stressed and not having enough time to seek out a therapist for one to one support.” Ms Labrum said.
