SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE SELECTS JOHN WILEY & SONS, INC. TO PUBLISH THE HOSPITALIST NEWSLETTER

January 06, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) has announced a new publishing agreement whereby global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., will assume publication of the Society's newsletter, The Hospitalist, effective immediately. The Hospitalist is the Society's official member publication, providing the latest in clinical and industry news for hospitalists throughout the United States.

In addition to the agreement with Wiley, SHM has also announced that Pharmaceutical Media Inc. (PMI) will provide full-service advertising sales support for The Hospitalist, also effective in January.

"At this important time in our Society's evolution, when membership is growing rapidly and hospital medicine is continuing as the fastest growing medical specialty in the country, it is important that we look to outside specialists to help us more expeditiously manage many of the functions that we previously handled internally,' said Laurence Wellikson, M.D., chief executive officer of SHM. "Both Wiley and PMI have the breadth of capability and the level of professionalism that we can count on today and in the future as we continue to grow and expand.'

"We have every confidence that we can meet and exceed the publishing goals of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and continue to evolve the newsletter as the Society and the specialty continue to grow,' said Shawn Morton, vice president and publishing director, Medicine, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

"This is a great opportunity for us and for the Society,' commented Frank Cox, president of Pharmaceutical Media Inc. "We're thrilled to be able to offer advertisers an important avenue for reaching physicians who are leading the way in improving quality of care and outcomes for hospitalized patients. Through The Hospitalist, advertisers and recruiters will have the potential to reach a largely untapped market of young, high potential, clinically-oriented physicians with many years of practice ahead.'

Launched in 1997, The Hospitalist contains the latest in Hospital Medicine research, news and industry issues, along with updates on recent or upcoming Society-sponsored programs, activities and educational opportunities, and the most extensive job listings available for hospitalists. Effective with its January/February 2005 issue, Wiley will distribute The Hospitalist newsletter to 12,000 recipients, including all members of the SHM.

Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. There are at present approximately 11,000 hospitalists nationwide, and this number is projected to grow to more than 30,000 by the end of the decade.
