Vantage Data Recovery Announces Expanded RAID Support

Merrimack, NH – Vantage Data Recovery has announced that it has substantially expanded their RAID data recovery capabilities to meet the increasing demand for their services. “Having purchased more equipment and dedicated more space to our RAID recovery operations, we have effectively doubled our capacity to handle the growing number of requests we are receiving”, according to Kevin Sullivan, VP of Operations at Vantage. “Our business continues to grow, and our success in recovering data from failed RAID volumes is helping to fuel that growth”.

Today, as music, video, and other forms of data command more and more hard drive space, computer users have demanded increased storage capacities. Computer manufacturers that traditionally have installed a single hard drive in a system have turned to linking multiple drives together to form one large storage volume. RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) data storage, once only found in network servers utilizing expensive SCSI controllers, has become much more affordable with the introduction of IDE RAID controllers. These newer controllers allow 2 or more inexpensive IDE drives to be linked together, offering increased data transfer speed, larger storage capacity and even data protection in certain RAID configurations.

RAID volume configurations are identified by a “RAID level” number. RAID 0 involves 2 or more drives comprising a “striped” volume, which has the advantage of speed but does not have any provision for fault-tolerance. RAID 1 consists of 2 or more drives that are “mirrored”, which provides data redundancy, but is extremely inefficient and may not allow restoration of one part of the mirror if the other part fails. RAID 5 requires at least 3 drives and is the most versatile implementation, since it allows the volume to be accessed seamlessly even if one drive fails. In theory, when a single drive in a RAID 5 configuration fails, the data contained on the failed drive can be “rebuilt” through the controller onto a new drive of the same (or higher) capacity. This is accomplished by using the parity information that is written to the other drives in the volume. However, in reality this method of volume restoration is not foolproof. Also, if more than one drive fails at the same time in the volume, the data cannot be “rebuilt” using this method. In these circumstances, Vantage recovers the data from the failed drives and uses that data to safely rebuild the volume structure, resulting in minimized downtime and inconvenience.
