According to the Spring 2006 issue of S3 Magazine, “Pilates is now a viable option in the TCI.” Lynda Lippin, recognized as one of the top Pilates trainers in the world, is teaching Pilates Mat, Ball, and Tower (spring-based Pilates equipment) classes and private trainings at The Studio at Island Network in Ports of Call on Grace Bay Road.

The original “core strengthening” Pilates method of exercise was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, a German national who believed everyone should exercise, no matter how old or injured. He stated, “You are only as old as your spine.” Pilates came up with idea of using hospital bed springs to exercise injured soldiers and internees when he was interned by the British as an “enemy alien” on the Isle of Man during WWI. Pilates then left Germany and brought his talents to New York in 1926 with the help of two of his clients, boxers Nat Fleischer and Max Schmelling.

Lippin is certified to teach Pilates, Gait Training, Pilates for Osteoporosis, & Pilates for Golf, and is one of only 54 Pilates teachers in the world to be chosen by the Pilates PhysicalMind Institute® to train new Pilates teachers. Lippin's Pilates certification workshops are recognized by the American Council on Exercise® as well as most other international fitness and Pilates certification programs.

Lippin is helping both Providenciales residents and visitors alike get in shape, improve their sports and work performance, and reduce back and neck pain in as little as 6 visits. Lippin’s clients include tourists, ex-pats, construction workers from nearby Seven Stars, instructors from Dive Provo, Belongers Julian Garland and Paula Brooks, and dentist Dr. Johann Pretorius and his wife Christina, an avid golfer.

Says Christina, “Since I started the Pilates Tower classes a couple of months ago I have felt a great improvement in my lower back, which was damaged when I was a teenager. I have been without sciatica for over two weeks now - the longest I can remember…. As a bonus my golf swing has improved - I am able to turn through the ball much better and keep my balance on my left side, which was always weak.”

As for Dr. Pretorius, “I have been doing Pilates with Lynda for 6 weeks. My work as a dentist requires a difficult posture for which I previously had to see a chiropractor every fortnight. Since starting Pilates I have had no lower backache and have not had to see a chiropractor once!”

For Lippin these are the rewards of her job. “One bonus of well taught Pilates exercise is the lessening of chronic back & neck pain. Even after all of these years when I hear people who have woken up in pain every morning for decades tell me that they are in less pain and enjoying life more, I am so thrilled!”

Lippin specializes in functional Pilates exercise for everyone from non-exercisers to the superfit as well as athletic performance enhancement.
In addition she has extensive experience working with clients who suffer from a variety of illnesses & injuries including but not limited to neck, back, and joint pain (disk herniations, spinal surgeries, stenosis, scoliosis, joint replacements, frozen shoulders, rotator cuff injury ); osteo & rheumatoid arthritis; osteoporosis; spinal cord injury (including paraplegia); mastectomy; abdominal surgeries; Parkinson's Disease; MS; cerebral palsy; muscular dystrophies; Fibromyalgia; and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
