While Disneyland celebrates its momentous 50th anniversary, another important milestone in the Disney family is also taking place. Winnie the Pooh turned 80.
Pooh’s 80th anniversary marks the London Evening News’ first printing of a Winnie the Pooh story on Christmas Eve of 1925. While many are aware that Walt Disney himself voiced the original Mickey Mouse from 1928 to 1946, and Clarence "Ducky" Nash provided Donald Duck’s famous semi-intelligible sound, who took over the voice of Winnie the Pooh following Sterling Holloway (
www.imdb.com/name/nm0001359/bio) is probably much less known.
In 1983, Jim Cummings attended Disney’s open call to replace ailing Winnie the Pooh voice actor Sterling Holloway. Cummings, in typical “star is born” fashion, was then hired to continue voicing the immortal sound of Pooh in his first ever voiceover job.
Over the next 20 years, Cummings’ voice actor roles included stints from bit characters to leads for a variety of studios, including Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, Dreamworks, and 20th Century Fox. His most famous roles continue to be with Walt Disney Studios, where he provided voices for such television series as Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, Bonkers, Gargoyles, and House of Mouse and movies including Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas and the Disney special edition of Alice in Wonderland.
