New Business, Book Help Area with Aging Issues

John Reddan has just opened Coastal Eldercare Solutions, an eldercare consulting practice designed to help area businesses restore productivity for their workers who are overwhelmed by the caregiving needs of their parents. He has also just published Reddan’s Coastal Eldercare Directory, a comprehensive guide to hundreds of eldercare services and companies here in the Coastal Empire.

The MetLife Mature Market Institute recently estimated that American businesses lost $29 billion dollars in productivity time last year because one out of every six employees in the U.S. is a primary caregiver for an aging family member. As people live longer and options for long-term care continue to become more complicated and expensive, a pressing need has emerged to help families navigate the eldercare system and make good decisions. Eldercare consulting is a rapidly growing profession in the United States that has evolved to meet that demand.

“We are going to help a lot of local businesses,” says Reddan. “You take the average employee who is working full time, raising children, and caring for a parent, that person often becomes emotionally and physically exhausted, and that impacts how well they do their job.

Our planning systems help families gain a feeling of control. When crises arise, as they always do, our clients have plans in place. Where they might once have uttered, ‘What do we do now?,’ people who have gone through our planning process know what to do, who to call, and where to go for the things they need. Plans take as little as two weeks to build, and once the plan is in place, caregiver stress is greatly reduced.”

Recognizing that caregiver stress can impact their bottom lines, more and more companies around the country are helping employees pay for services like Reddan’s as part of their Employee Assistance Programs.

Before opening his business, Reddan started working with the National Association of Geriatric Care Managers three years ago. “Our care managers use the association’s protocols for all of our assessments. It’s a wonderful organization that has helped us in every facet of creating our business model. The only thing we have shunned is their suggestion to bill by the hour.”

Unlike most care management practices across the country, Coastal Eldercare Solutions charges flat fees. “I am a relationship builder in a relationship business. If someone calls us at 8 in the evening, I don’t want them thinking they’re on the clock. I want our company to help them solve their problems and make them feel better. I don’t believe that charging in 15-minute increments is conducive to that end.”

The initial appointment with Reddan or members of his staff is free and is a wonderful opportunity to see if his company’s services can benefit the family. From there, Reddan has a menu of services available with fees ranging from $400 to $2,500 depending upon the level of planning the family desires. For families who have already made long-term care decisions, Reddan’s company offers a monitoring service that provides regular and objective feedback to family members regarding how well things are going between the client and the chosen senior care community or other care provider.”

“For out-of-town families whose parents live here, our monitoring service is especially helpful. It provides an extra level of checks and balances to ensure quality of care,” says Reddan.

Reddan has also just published Reddan’s Coastal Eldercare Directory, a comprehensive guide to hundreds of eldercare services in Savannah, Hilton Head, and St. Simons. Large print, handy indexes, and color-coding help move the reader smoothly and easily through everything from area assisted living communities and senior service organizations to home health providers and medical equipment companies. Each listing is a minimum of 300 words and comes complete with color photographs. The book is available at all LoCost, Carter’s, and Quick Rx pharmacies. It is also for sale at E. Shaver Booksellers and Barnes and Noble. Orders can be made on the web by going to http://www.eldercare-savannah.com, or by calling (912) 353-9000.

Says Reddan, “I knew we would never be able to help everyone in the area, so I put a book together that I thought just might. Not only can the book help families gain a better understanding of local eldercare services, it’s a terrific resource for physicians, attorneys, accountants, financial planners, and any other professionals working with seniors.”
