The Money's in the Modem

Lansing, MI July 12th 2006— With the rising costs of gas and the increasing threat of layoffs some families may find it essential to have extra cash flow.

“Starting a home based Internet based business is a great way to have an additional income source.” says Donyell Nelson, a Michigan based entrepreneur an Internet talk radio show host who has written a new book Jump Start Your Success: 9 Insider Secrets to Running an Online Business.

A May 2006 study by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration revealed that home based sole proprietors generate $102 billion in annual revenue.

“Home based Internet businesses are becoming very trendy because they are relatively simple to start due to the low startup costs.”

What should people consider before they start an online business? “There are five things every current and potential online business owner should reflect on,” says Nelson.

1.Target Market: Many business owners fail to focus in on a target market. They think that because they have a product or service to sell that someone will want to buy it. Sometimes that’s true and sometimes it isn’t but the question shouldn’t be “will someone want to buy this?” the question should be “who has a need for this?”

2.Productivity: One of the best things about working online is that it offers a sense of freedom. However, this freedom can also be counterproductive. Excessive checking of email, web surfing, and instant chats can dramatically decrease your productivity. Making a list of tasks you need to accomplish daily can help eliminate time wasting.

3.Professionalism: It doesn’t matter if you work at home in your boxers or if you are leasing office space; if you want people to do business with you, you must show them that you care about your business. Respond to emails in a timely fashion, answer the phone in a professional manner, and deliver goods and services on time.

4.The Numbers: People are afraid of numbers but they should embrace them. Ask yourself “how much do I need to make per day in order to make my weekly goal? How much do I need to make per month in order to come to a yearly amount that I like?”

5.Long Term Goals: Don’t look at an online business as a way to make quick money. Set long term goals that will ensure your success for years to come. This doesn't work by saying obscure things like "I want a successful business". What does successful mean? Instead you should set goals that are specific and that are time related. “I want to make $200 per day by December selling antiques on eBay”.
