UK Government can do more to help first time home buyers

The National Audit Office report on the Government’s Low Cost Housing Schemes spending.

Comment from Helen Adams, Managing Director of First Time Buyers’ advice –site www.FirstRungNow.com

“The NAO report is very detailed and welcome. It makes some sensible recommendations for improving the cost efficiency of the Government assistance with low cost home ownership. However, it does point out that whilst the Government is showing willing, its schemes are complicated, not uniformly administered and subject to certain inefficiencies. My main observation is that whilst they will indeed help a number of key workers, it will leave the average aspiring first time buyer no closer to his or her dream.

A poll amongst aspiring first time buyers at FirstRungNow.com reveals that when asked if it is easy to find out what help the government offers first time buyers, 80% said ‘no’ and 76% said that government help is too focused on key-workers.

As well as simplifying, improving and expanding what they offer, the new schemes must also reach more people”.
