JPEG 2000 Multi-Layer

Xerox introduced software that combines both the image coding standard of JPEG and the picture-and-text ease of the Mixed Raster Content (MRC). With the automated document design software, text, graphics and other elements that may be parts of a complex document will flow smoothly to create clear and good quality page layouts.

One author described the new software as a page layout genie that function as a guide over the user, may he be a professional artist or a graphically-challenged office employee.

With the changing times and the needs of users constantly being diversified, users have come to a point where the basic is not anymore enough to create high end documents. Although JPEG worked well with images and files, new processes demand for additional capabilities.

To answer that need, Xerox introduced software that integrates the JPEG 2000 for different modes of image access, and MRC for coding files containing pictures and text. The result is an interactive Web display of compound document images.

The JPEG 2000 Multi-Layer (JPM)
According to Xerox, the JPEG 2000 Multi-Layer is automated document-layout software that takes care of the text, graphics, headlines, and diagrams to create a page layout that is cohesive, concise and aesthetically appealing. The software then arranges this raw content according to sound design principles. But the software doesn't stop there. It continues to design until it finally comes up with pages that look good. If the user adds more elements like more text, graphics, or pictures, the software automatically redesigns the pages. In short, JPM is the ultimate wish for graphic designers and layout artists. Just add elements to the layout and the software will take care of everything.

Similar to the process used by the MRC in handling compound images, the JPM file splits the compound document into an assortment of layered objects. Each of these layered objects contains a picture, graphics, a headline, text, and even a single paragraph.

A research fellow in the Xerox Innovation Group has this to say about the software: "Displaying a compound document image now becomes an interactive process. With the right software, you can request the level of quality that is appropriate to the task at hand and the information a user needs. The result: the viewer controls the flow of information and how the page downloads."

With the new technology, viewers are able to get an initial sample view of the compound image, and then have the option to choose to resolve the whole lot, or just one portion. They could click on the part for a more detailed view, or click on another section, continuing until the entire page is downloaded. And at any point in the process, the users have the option to move on to the next Web page when it suits them.

With the JPEG 2000 Multi-Layer, users are given the capability to interact with the document images viewed over the Web. In addition, they are also given the power to interactively decode and display documents.
