Kontron® (TecDAX: KBC), one of the world's largest suppliers of open modular communication building blocks for telecom applications in next generation wireless and wireline networks, and Surf Communication Solutions (“Surf”), a leading developer of high-capacity multimedia processing boards for the telecommunication infrastructure field, today announced their partnership to jointly develop and market AdvancedTCA®-, AdvancedMC™-, and MicroTCA-based convergent media solutions to the communications market. The first phase of the joint venture will be for Surf to integrate and validate Surf’s AMC-DSP module, the SurfRider/AMCTM which runs Surf’s SurfUPTM media processing enabling technology, with Kontron’s AdvancedTCA carrier board, the AT8400 which features four AdvancedMC bays, PCI-Express and Gigabit Ethernet switching, and a SAS controller.

Telecom customers will be able to take advantage of a fully integrated blade-level solution that is easily manageable via IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface), and is designed to deliver on low power, ultra-dense processing, for lower operating costs and a ‘swap-in/swap-out’ flexibility for media gateway and media server systems.

“The Kontron AdvancedTCA, MicroTCA and AdvancedMC modular-based systems are ideal for the deployment of various IMS network elements,” explained Tom Meyer, Director of Kontron Communications. “Our partnership with Surf, which includes the integration with their SurfRider/AMC DSP module, will be essential in expanding the market opportunities for easy integration of voice and video applications on these leading open platforms, which ultimately supports the industry trend of moving away from proprietary systems.”

“The union between Kontron open modular platform technology and the unique media processing capabilities of our SurfRider/AMC DSP resource board—wherein all three media types: voice, video and data (fax and modem) can be processed simultaneously on a single DSP—will provide our customers with comprehensive, cost-effective, and easy-to-integrate communication solutions to drive and distribute their voice and video applications," commented Eyal Zagagi, President and CEO of Surf Communication Solutions.

The combined Kontron/Surf solution is a highly-scalable, modular building block for convergent AdvancedTCA, MicroTCA and proprietary communications systems, such as IP to-IP and TDM (Mobile)-to-IP media gateways, media-enhanced servers, session border controllers, CTI applications (e.g., voice and video mail), conference bridges, wireless base stations, iPBX, and softswitches. Surf’s media processing enabling solutions run on Texas Instruments (TI) state-of-the-art TMS320C64xTM DSP generation.
