Toronto — The Armitsar Medical and Dental Alumni Association of North America held its 28th Annual AMDAANA International Convention last weekend at the downtown Sheraton to discuss recent advances in medicine. Uniting physicians and dentists from around the world, the purpose of the two-day conference was to provide new developments in healthcare and diagnosing and treating a wide array of clinical issues.

AMDAANA was founded in 1979 in Seven Springs, PA with the objective of developing camaraderie amongst alumni of Government Medical and Dental Colleges, Amritsar, Punjab India, residing in North America and to enhance patient care at its alma maters through enriching education. The organization has over 800 members world-wide and growing, and holds its annual meeting on the third week of July in major cities across North America.

The annual meeting provided an excellent opportunity for alumni to fellowship and network and discuss the latest advances in medicine. Moderators Harinder Sandu, DDS, PhD, Rajnish Chaudhary, MD, and Jatinder Sidhu, MD, discussed a host of educational objectives such as solutions for lower loose denture, reviewing the role of pathology in lung disease, recognizing major categories of drugs causing acute kidney failure, reviewing plaque rupture, and learning the common health risks associated with traveling to tropical and developing countries, to name a few.

The event also served as a Reward and Recognition awards ceremony for distinguished alumni as well as for CAMDAANA (Children of American Medical and Dental Alumni Association of North America) who participated in a fun talent show.

Balwinder Singh Sidhu, MD, and President, provided the overall vision for the organization and talked about a number of key initiatives including setting up a task force for elevating the quality of patient care for alma matters, collaborating with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and establishing an Endowment Fund for donating equipment, providing needed improvements and renovations for campuses, and setting up dispensaries to serve the less fortunate.
