Author Tracy Falbe has donated books to benefit Reading is Fundamental and Literacy Volunteers of America. Ten copies of her novel “Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I” will be on display at the 64th annual World Science Fiction Convention, or Worldcon, before being included in raffle prize packages with other donations from the science fiction and fantasy publishing community.

“Authors give away books anyway,” Falbe said. “It’s nice to have an opportunity to donate to a charity raffle that helps literacy organizations. As a reader and a writer, it’s difficult to imagine how hard life would be not being able to read.”

Worldcon will be taking place from August 23 to 27 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The event is being sponsored this year by the Southern California Institute for Fan Interests. Thousands will attend Worldcon where many famous writers, actors, and filmmakers will be special guests. This year’s Worldcon will have a special Bridge of the Enterprise exhibit to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Star Trek television series.

Visitors to the convention can see “Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I” along with many other new science fiction and fantasy books at the show’s book exhibit. Donations for the charity raffle that raises money for Reading is Fundamental and Literacy Volunteers of America were gathered by Val Ontell, Book Exhibit Coordinator for Worldcon.

“Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I” has received positive reviews since its publication in January 2006 along with the next book in the series “The Goddess Queen: The Rys Chronicles Book II.” The Midwest Book Review called this fantasy series “An exciting treat for fantasy buffs” and Falbe hopes that the raffle winners of her books will agree.

The adventures in “The Rys Chronicles” revolve around the magical fantasy race that Falbe created called rys. They are mortal but long-lived and possess innate magical powers. Most rys are born with only common magic, but in rare instances, a rys will have an extreme talent for magic that can have many uses both beneficial and dangerous. The main rys character is Shan, who seeks to destroy Onja, the cruel Queen of the rys. Shan is driven both by his ambition and the moral need to end the evil reign of his queen. Good at heart and compassionate, Shan is constantly tormented by the reality that he must use his power to kill and incite rebellion in order to achieve the good goal of defeating a wicked tyrant.

Falbe believes that fantasy readers who like wars for a throne, magical battles, duels, palace intrigue, backwoods skirmishes, and a touch love should consider reading “The Rys Chronicles.”
