(Edgerton/Stoughton, Wisconsin) – (February 18, 2005)
The Chicago Chapter of the Society for Technical Communications (STC)(www.stc-chicago.org) today announced that the book, Building Your Business Plan, 28 Days to Designing and Running Your Business by Kevin Devine, was named “Best of Show” in their 32nd Annual Technical Publications Competition. Sharing the award is Madison technical illustrator Marty Whitt, proprietor of MacMarty Graphics, who created the cover for the book.

The Society for Technical Communications is the world’s largest organization for technical communicators, with over 18,000 members world-wide, dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication. The Chicago chapter holds an annual competition in the areas of publications, art, and on-line communication, with awards based on the work’s writing, graphics, copyediting and overall integration, judged in the context of purpose, content, and organization. Awards are given in levels of Merit, Excellence, and Distinguished. Only Distinguished works in each category are eligible to be awarded the single Best of Show honor.

According to Lisa Tallman, STC Chicago Competition Manager, “The judges found Building Your Business Plan consistently executes technical communications principles in a clearly superior manner, resulting in an elegant work of very high quality.” As a result of this award, Building Your Business Plan will automatically be entered in STC’s International Publications competition to be held this spring.

Building Your Business Plan is a step-by-step workbook designed to help Ordinary-Joes and Janes to stop, think, and plan for their business, whether working alone or with others. Some of the technical communications techniques the author uses to full advantage include illustrations and graphics to simplify complex concepts, step-by-step checklists, and worksheets that break the plan into small, easily manageable steps.

Kevin is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, with a Masters degree in Adult Education. In addition to his own business, he works at a non-profit corporation in Madison teaching low income adults how to start a business and create a business plan. He is a past Senior member of STC and has served as Chapter President for the local Four Lakes Chapter of the organization. He has published in the STC magazine Intercom and has presented at STC conferences, as well has having appeared on Biz-Talk with Jim Rosetti on WHBY radio in Appleton, Wisconsin.
