The Paper Mill Store .com to Use 100% Renewable Energy to Power Business

Sun Prairie, Wis. – The Paper Mill Store .com, a leading, online printing paper and envelope resource for graphics professionals, has announced its commitment to use renewable energy to power one-hundred percent of its operations. Beginning September 1, 2006, it will use 245,290 kilowatt hours of Green-e certified wind power annually to power its warehousing, converting and distribution center as well as its corporate headquarters, both located in Wisconsin. Green-e, www.green-e.org, is a nationally recognized certification program that helps consumers identify superior, certified renewable energy products that meet strict environmental guidelines.

The Paper Mill Store purchased three years worth of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for nationwide new wind sources from Sterling Planet, a leading provider of renewable energy. These RECs offset emissions from conventional electricity production processes, using nonrenewable fuel sources, such as coal, oil and natural gas. The purchase serves to avoid the generation of approximately 1,024,331 pounds of carbon dioxide, the leading greenhouse gas. The environmental benefit of this compares to 138 acres of trees planted and 803,351 miles not driven.

“Our purchase of wind energy demonstrates our commitment to being a socially responsible company and offers our customers a way to make a positive impact on the environment by doing business with us,” said CEO Brian Cowie. “In addition, this commitment helps to build a market for renewable energy, reduce dependence on foreign energy sources and support domestic economies.”

With this purchase, The Paper Mill Store joins its vendor partners Mohawk Fine Papers and National Envelope in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership and Green Power Leadership Club. To become a Partner, organizations replace a portion of their annual electricity consumption with green power. The Green Power Leadership Club further honors Green Power Partners that have made an exemplary green power purchase that significantly exceeds minimum Green Power Partnership purchase requirements.

“The Paper Mill Store’s purchase serves as an excellent example to its industry peers on what businesses can do in taking action to reduce the risks associated with climate change,” said James Critchfield, director of EPA's Green Power Partnership. “This purchase helps support the growing renewable energy market.”
