Behind the Scenes Music Mogul Retires with Shocking Tell All Book.
(
PRLEAP.COM) Veteran music promoter, Gordon "Gordy" Levine retires after more than 35 years of promoting and drawing publicity to some of the world’s most prominent artists. . The man behind the creation of many teen idols and music megastars tells all in his new book, The Man in the Shadows.
"I am the man behind the scenes of the people that behind the scenes" explains Levine. "We had to create scandal to create stars. Rock and roll is rat race".
The man who coined the phrase” Any publicity is good publicity” says that he wants to retire and enjoy the payoff of a lifetime of hard work. Gordon reveals that some of Rock and Rolls most infamous scandals were not scandals at all.
"When a record promoter could not break new act or a even a veteran project off the ground, they called me. My first big scandal was with the Beatles". Gordy explains. "The album sales were slipping and they were being overshadowed by Beatles copycats. I told Epstein, we should leak that John was seriously hurt in an auto accident oversees. We eventually worked our way up to letting the world believe that Paul had gotten killed! It still gets written about today. I am just revealing this as a hoax in my book. Once I threw the bone out there, you guys in the media went after it like nobody’s business."
Gordy goes on to explain that he made lasting relationships with industry moguls. He says, " I never wanted to be i the spotlight. I was happy to stay in the background. In fact, I could never have pulled off most of this stuff any other way."
Gordy said he learned a couple of things from his music mogul buddies. " One day Clive and I were out to a brunch with some Japanese executives from one of Japan’s biggest record distributors. We were trying to secure a distribution contract in that territory. It was all going down hill. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, Clive says he has trick to show us. He pulled out his hands and slipped his thump under his fingers of one hand and made like he was pulling his index finger off. It was great illusion,. I still do haven’t figured out how to do it. These Japanese executives were so amused by this simple illusion trick! I couldn’t believe that 5 minutes earlier we were kissing this sweet deal good bye! They signed the deal five minutes later, still laughing it up and having Clive teach them this trick.
The cigar smoking Brooklyn native recalls some regrets. "Maria’s CD just was not selling enough to keep the execs happy. The promoter called on us and we did what needed to be done to get the press interested. We sold a lot of records and rescued her career, but I am not sure it was worth it."
Gordy explains why he choose to set things straight in his retirement. " I just think it’s the right thing to do. We all know when we pick up the tabloids, were just getting schnooked, but not everyone gets it. I just want to clean up some reputations before I’m gone. Anyone mentioned in my book want be hurt at all by me telling all. They are long past needing a PR doctor like me.
He further explains in thick east coast tone," I ‘m not giving away all the secrets in one lump. I have to save enough for the next book."
Gordy Levine retires after over 40 years of making Rock and Roll headlines…from the sidelines.
