William, James & Co. proudly presents Traveling Light: Chasing an Illuminated Life, by Deborah DeWit Marchant. The high demand for this cherished little book led this publishing house to seek the rights and to re-issue it.

Falling between traditional genres, Traveling Light is the reflective memoir of a photographer whose creative work demonstrates a sensitive devotion to the artist’s timeless connection with light.

The 96-page softback features 47 of Marchant’s color photographs - hazy, idyllic countryside; fences, doorways and clothes drying on the line; winding stairwells and wooded paths. Her narrative considers light both literally and figuratively in the artist’s life as she travels across the U.S. to Scotland, France and Australia. The romance of her life experiences are captivating and the beauty of her prose engaging.

Marchant is a self-taught, working artist and has had an active gallery exhibition schedule for the past 20 years. Her work is sought after by publishers for book covers, as illustrations in magazines, as notecards, and as calendars. It is also in numerous private collections. She lives outside of Portland, Oregon.

ACCOLADES

“DeWit Marchant’s recollections of a developing esthetic offer a poetic coming-of-age memoir that articulates a joy of discover-from nature to art to life. What an exquisite little book!”
–Eleanor Edmondson, president of Bas Bleu, Bookseller-by-Post

“This is not a philosophical book, yet philosophy suffuses every page. It is not only an autobiography, though it chronicles the inner life of the artist’s passionate quest. It is, perhaps, an illustrated meditation on the ways and means of light in all of our lives.”
