"Web suckers are getting harder and harder to locate," says Alec Defrawy. "It's almost as if they're getting smarter."

No one knows how many remain, but Defrawy's doing his best to find and tag as many as he can.

The Defrawy Web Sucker Project, headquartered in Groveland, Florida, spares no effort to flush these elusive creatures out of hiding, identify them and add them to its growing database.

"Once they're gone, they're gone," warns Defrawy.

"And I'm not sure I want to live in a world without web suckers."

Dr. Alec Defrawy, who gained widespread fame as the internet's most prolific purveyor of wholly-specious employment offers, now finds great joy in saving one of nature's creatures.

"It's a passion," he smiles.
