In September 2006 an European student launched a website with the goal of earning $1,000.000 in just 21 steps and give away another $1,000.000 in the end. The website, www.21steps.com, was launched mostly as a joke - but as it turns out the idea is working.

The straightforward concept uses advertising and the power of multiplication by 2. The author is selling 21 advertisement spaces, each progressively larger than the last and placed closer to the top of the page. Each slot is twice as expensive as the previous one. The first banner space cost only $1, and the 21st will cost $1,000.000. By multiplying each price by two, the million-dollar price is reached in just 21 steps and over 2 million dollars will be collected.

The idea is simple but effective. During the first two weeks - without any promotion or press coverage - 21steps.com was visited over 3,000 times and eight of the 21 web ads were sold. The inventive student is already one-third of the way to his goal of a million.

There are additional incentives to attract publicity. Attention is sure to be substantial when a drawing is broadcast on TV to select one from among the 21 advertiser that will get one million dollars. Additionally the buyer of the 21st and largest banner will become the owner of the www.21steps.com domain for at least one year to market their products or services.
