INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH MAGAZINE TO LAUNCH ON 4TH MARCH

International Women’s Month Magazine (IWM), the UK’s only magazine dedicated to International Women’s Month, will officially be launched on Friday 4th March 2005 at the Chesterfield Hotel, Mayfair.

Speaking on the debut of its prototype at the Mayor of London’s Capital Woman Conference, 2004, Ken Livingstone said: “I am pleased to welcome and support this innovative and long-overdue publication that celebrates the endurance, determination and achievement of women of all races and creeds, and women on an international level, whilst paying significant attention to UK based female entrepreneurs.”

According to Barbara Campbell, Publisher of International Women’s Month Magazine, ever since a woman’s right to a career and an independent lifestyle has been recognised, women have climbed up the corporate ladder, held top government positions and excelled in their chosen professions. “Given a chance to show their worth, they have soared, flown like the doves they are and have been a source of encouragement and inspiration to those coming up behind them.”

There will be a showcase, and a multimedia presentation. Speakers on the night include: Oona King MP, Dounne Alexander, Ahlam Akran (Palestinian Women’s Rights activist) and Harriet Lamb from Fair Trade (the organisation responsible for fair trading). There will also be an address from Patricia Hewitt MP on the night.

Voices With Soul (The X Factor) will also be performing among other forms of entertainment.

“We felt that it was about time someone produced a magazine to show the importance of International Women’s Month and more importantly recognize the contribution of women in our society. In celebrating the achievements of women the magazine has transcended various obstacles and is dedicated to highlighting positive role models in society.

“Its main focus is on gender and not race, colour or creed and we welcome further contributions from sponsors and advertisers. International Women’s Month Magazine is about documenting the achievements of women, telling stories of what they have done and what they went through to get to this point in their lives,” said Barbara.

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone also acknowledged that in recognizing the unique challenges faced by women-owned businesses the Greater London Authority, along with its partner organisations is committed to supporting this group. “I hope you enjoy International Women’s Month Magazine (IWM) as it gives a good overview of women’s tremendous contribution to life in general and this country’s economy. A publication such as IWM… deserves support, and I am happy to add my support.”

Although women’s achievement has been celebrated for over 80 years, this is the first magazine to represent this annual recognition of their success. Barbara says: “Women comprise 26% of the 3.2 million self-employed in the UK, which could be construed as relatively minor when it comes to large business and enterprise but research over the past few years have shown that more and more women are taking control of their own destiny and getting support from establishments that might once have been considered only open to men. Their success can be measured by the many award events that have sprung up to acknowledge women over the years.”

IWM also has the support of Terry Mansfield (CBE), President and CEO of Nat Mag and the Hearst Corporation which publishes Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Reveal and others.
