Farmers' Almanac TV Plans 30-minute Farm Aid Episode for Public Television
(PRLEAP.COM) SAVANNAH, Ga., October 3, 2006 – The new, engaging television series Farmers’ Almanac TV™ just concluded three days of shooting the Farm Aid events in New Jersey, gathering footage for an unprecedented 30-minute episode on the charity.
Farmers’ Almanac TV will produce three stories about the 21-year-old organization: A history of Farm Aid, a story about one of the family farms that has benefited from Farm Aid programs and a story about the event itself. The stories will appear in the final episode of the show’s second season, which starts in January.
“We are thoroughly looking forward to this half-hour show,” said Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid. “It’s an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the importance of family farms and fresh, locally-produced food - and our role in promoting both.”
The Farm Aid episode is one of 13 episodes of the Farmers’ Almanac TV show, inspired by the trusted and treasured Farmers’ AlmanacTM. The show debuted on public television in April and is broadcast in 38 states to date.
“We feel that it’s time to give tribute to Farm Aid for its efforts over the last 21 years,” said Renee Bishop, Executive Director of the magazine-style show, which features entertaining and time-tested information about weather, gardening, natural cures and more.
She noted that Farm Aid has worked tirelessly to put programs in place that help support the family farm.
When it started in 1985, its founders, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp, were primarily concerned with saving family farms, which were going out of business fast in a time when land values were falling and interest rates were soaring. When that farm crisis passed, the mission changed. Farm Aid now focuses primarily on connecting farmers with consumers, and raising awareness about the healthy benefits of eating fresh food.
"We started out trying to save the family farm," Nelson said at a pre-concert news conference. "Now, it looks like the family farm is going to save us."
Farmers’ Almanac TV will also make the three Farm Aid stories available on its web site,
www.FarmersAlmanacTV.com in November, as part of a special tribute to family farms this Thanksgiving.
“We are thoroughly excited about the footage we have collected. Combine that with the historical b-roll that Farm Aid is supplying and we have very compelling video,” Bishop said. “No one should miss our web site or show."
