ST. LOUIS – Lee Biosolutions is now offering beta 2 Microglobulin derived from three different sources at LeeBio.com.

Human b2 microglobulin isolated from human urine, anti-human b2 microglobulin gathered from a chicken host, and genetically engineered recombinant human b2 microglobulin are all available to researchers studying the protein’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases.

Beta 2 microglobulin is a small protein found on the surface of many cells, such as lymphocytes, and in blood and urine. A rise in the levels of b2 microglobulin in the blood or urine has been found to indicate the presence of certain diseases, including myeloma and lymphoma cancer.

According to company President Burton Lee, the protein has also proven to be a reliable marker of kidney disease and has been studied in relation to rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis and a number of viral diseases.

“Researchers continue to find more and more applications for this unique protein,” Lee said. “We’ve decided to offer it from three different sources in order to give researchers a convenient basis for comparative analysis, without the hassle of going through several different vendors.”

The human donors are all of US origin and were tested and found to be free of HbsAg, HCV, HIV-1 & 2, Syphilis and HIV-1 antigen by currently approved FDA methods.

To develop the anti-human product, chickens were immunized with highly purified human beta 2-microglobulin isolated from human urine. The resulting anti-human beta 2-microglobulin was solid phase absorbed then affinity purified off an antigen containing immunoabsorbant.

The recombinant product was produced as an inclusion body in E. coli by expressing gene encoding human beta-2-microglobulin. From the inclusion body, the b2 microglobulin was refolded and treated by CNBr cleavage to show identical amino acid sequence to native one from human tissue origin.
