Synopsis: THUNDER ON MONASTERY RIDGE… a haunting, gossamer-winged ode to love and tragedy.

Young Daniel had been left by his ill mother in the care of the monks. He grew to manhood within the isolating confines of the walls of the monastery that hovered on the cliff like a drab brown monolith straining upward toward heaven. When he came of age, the brothers accepted him into their monastic society. As it was the only life he'd ever known, without question, he became one of them.
Eight year old Rebecca had been sent from the orphanage to The Willows, a property that bordered the grounds of the monastery, to work for the slovenly, mean-spirited Arthur Cain and his wife, Beatrice, who was so firmly ruled by her husband that she had long ago forgotten how to love.
One day while gathering wood in the forest, Rebecca meets Daniel …
And so ensues a tale of star crossed hearts whose forbidden love questions God and Daniel's religious teachings. Their destinies are as steadfastly entwined as the gnarled vines interwoven among the forest trees.

Listen… quietly descending on gossamer wings… This lyrical tale whispers to your heart and just as gently touches your soul.

Excerpt: Footsteps. Running footsteps hitting the forest floor urgently. Daniel listened, ears alert, and then he heard another set of footsteps falling heavily and the sound of a heavy form crashing into anything in its path as it lurched blindly through the dusky interior of the forest.
Daniel could hear the first set of footsteps coming closer, and he peered around the wide girth tree. Dear God in heaven! Rebecca! She ran wildly, her long night dress, clutched in her fists, and she ran as if all the demons of hell were at her heels.
With movements as silent as the doctrines of his ascetic life, Daniel slipped through the camouflage of the darkened forest to a place where there was a grove of concealing trees. He waited. Within minutes, Rebecca was adjacent to him. Daniel reached out and pulled her from the path. She screamed once–-a tiny bubbling cry. He quickly stifled further sounds with a restraining hand. In the murkiness, her eyes focused on the brown, robe-clad figure. She sank against him, and he held her, shielding her from the eyes of the night and the man who chased her.

Reviews:
The author, Fern Smith-Brown, had the foresight and wisely understood that to lengthen this story with episodic fillers would only have watered down this poignant story, thus making it ineffectual.
