David Teale, the former Managing Director of Manchester Airport Aviation Services, has been appointed as Chief Executive of Excellence North West.

David, who played a major role in the development of the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) over a period of almost 30 years, will be spearheading Excellence North West’s expansion into the Yorkshire and North East regions and helping to raise the profile of its annual North of England Business Excellence Awards.

Born and brought up in Lancashire, David studied history at Leeds University and started his career as a trainee at the Post Office Headquarters in London. He returned to the North in 1974 to join Manchester Airport where he worked in various roles until he retired in 2005, apart from a four-year period at the former Greater Manchester Council.

Apart from his most recent position, during his time with MAG he has been Director of Customer Services, Director of Operations, Director of Runway 2 and Chair of Humberside Airport.

He said: “Throughout my career I have always placed the utmost importance on continuous improvement and the pursuit of business excellence and I am delighted to be part of an organisation dedicated to this cause. Excellence North West provides high quality services to its members and I am looking forward to working to expand the business.”

Paul Evans, chairman of Excellence North West, said: “It’s a real accolade to have someone of David’s calibre to lead the team. His appointment comes at an exciting time for the organisation. Since its inception in 1994, Excellence North West has played an important role in improving the performance of many businesses in the region. Due to increasing interest from outside the region, the organisation will soon be extending its services to cover the whole of the North and the annual awards have already been renamed to reflect this.”

David is also a non-executive director of the NHS Business Services Authority, chair of Parkway Green Housing Trust and a trustee of the Manchester Airports Group Staff Pension Fund. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and a chartered member of the Institute of Personnel and Development

David is married with four daughters and lives in Alderley Edge. His interests include travel, the arts and swimming and he is a keen supporter of Preston North End Football Club and Lancashire Cricket Club.
