United Copper Industries First In Market to Offer Lead-free Wiring for Commercial and Residential Construction

November 10, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
United Copper Industries announced this week its strategic plan to offer what it believes is the country's first supply of lead-free insulated wire intended for commercial use in schools, public buildings, churches and in residential housing. A team of engineers has laid the groundwork for development of lead-free wiring products based on RoHS, an environmental policy already set in place by the European Union. "While we do not currently have such a requirement in our country, with the technology available to bring our products to this higher standard, it made good sense to us as a business to offer wire that exceeds the National Electrical Manufacturer's Association's Phase One commitment in restricting the use of hazardous substances by July 1, 2010," said United Copper Industries Vice President Ronald Pritchett. Mr. Pritchett was also quick to point out that trace amounts of lead are found in copper; however, such amounts fall far below the safety standards currently set by the Phase One commitment. "We cannot change copper but we can change the insulation and jacketing and that is where the lead content makes a difference," Pritchett added.

This progressive move places United Copper Industries in a leading position in the copper building wire market in the United States and will allow customers an opportunity to do their part in constructing environmentally friendly structures. "By offering these lead-free products, we are creating long-term value for anyone developing a construction project. We are still delivering the high quality our customers have come to know and expect, while producing a product that sets a new environmental standard," Pritchett said. "Our company is extremely proud to be an innovator in our field to make such products available in the United States."

Prior to the company's new offering, PVC insulation for wire products contained from 10,000 up to 50,000 parts per million of lead. As of October 1, 2006 all PVC wire insulation produced by United Copper Industries contained zero parts per million of lead.

United Copper Industries is a manufacturer of copper building wire solely committed to serving the electrical distribution market. The company manufactures copper building wire used in both residential and commercial construction. All products are UL approved and listed.
