“Consolidate, Connect and Update” Federal Healthcare IT focus at Human & Health Services for 2007

(PRLEAP.COM) GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Federal spending monitor fedXccel is reporting that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is forecasted to spend nearly $5 billion on over 670 major technology initiatives during 2007. This spending is part of the overall $698 billion budget for the department which is a 9% increase over 2006. The budget places an emphasis on deploying information technology to transform healthcare.

“The Healthcare industry has been slow to adopt Information Technology thus far,” said fedXccel chief Gaurav Pal. “This is about to change with HHS taking an aggressive role in providing investments for significant upgrades.”

There is a lot of interest in Federal Healthcare initiatives, prompting the Bethesda Chapter of AFCEA to host an all-day event, Health IT Day. Experts from Health and Human Services (HHS), the Veteran’s Administration (VA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spoke about the government’s desire to upgrade existing aging systems that hinder efficient communication and are difficult to maintain due to complex software code.

Department spending will reflect the Administration’s emphasis on promoting the adoption of centralized health record management and allowing systems to share data to help contain rising health care costs. “Consolidation of data centers, connecting systems and a technology refresh to component based architectures are thrust areas,” said Pal. “Private firms with expertise in these areas are likely to be called upon to help with this transition.”

Players in the federal IT market are gearing up to assist and play their role in implementing cutting edge solutions. “We were a sponsor of the Federal IT Healthcare Day because Healthcare is a strategic area of our focus, given the complexity of the problems in imaging, Systems Integration and replacing legacy software" said Jim Terry, VP Business Development at Ecompex, Inc.
