With the inception of the US Governments 50 State Quarter program in 1999, the popularity of coin proof sets have noticed a dramatic increase in popularity. Robert Mangels, a spokesman for GoldenEagleCoin.com , one of the nations leading distributors of US Mint issued products has been recommending these US Proof Sets for over 50 years. “The State Quarters have added a new dimension to this market, creating an uptrend unlike any we have seen in years.” states Mangels.

US Mint issued proof sets come in different variations. The first is the regular issue, which includes all of the coins issued by the US Government for the corresponding year. The second is the State Quarters by themselves, without the remaining five or six coins. Of particular interest has been the US Mint Silver Proof Sets, which include all of the mint issued coins struck in pure silver as opposed to their normal content of copper-nickel clad. The 1999 Silver Proof Set was issued for around $30 per set in 1999, as of March 2005 the set has been trading for around $300 with no signs of letting up. “The Silver Proof Sets have been the only way that one could acquire the 50 State Quarters struck in pure silver, which has created an unparalleled demand for them” says Mangels, whose company Golden Eagle Coins have been noticing this influx of coin investors first hand.

With most savings accounts yielding around 1% and major utilities yielding 4%, it seems these US government issued products are a far cry from your average US savings bond.
