Smart Virginia Businesses Cash In On $856,719 Electric Bill Savings

December 14, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Chesapeake, Virginia – Utility Management Services, Inc. –
To-date, Virginia businesses have saved $856,719 on their annual electric bills by being placed on more favorable rates with Dominion and Appalachian Power. Savings range from 5%-17% of their annual bills and average $5,908 for the 145 businesses audited.

Many businesses assume that their power provider is required by law to place them on the best rate. However, Virginia’s two major power providers, Dominion Power and Appalachian Power are NYSE-traded companies that must please stockholders as well.

Dominion’s terms and conditions clearly state that they cannot guarantee the customer will be served under the best rate. It also says that the responsibility for selecting the best rate ultimately falls on the customer. (Section VIII, Paragraphs B, D - Dominion Power Terms and Conditions for the Provision of Electric Service)

Commercial/industrial accounts are placed on “one-size-fits-all” rates when activated. Most businesses don’t know about specialized rates that could save them money. This is where most overcharges occur.

Once informed, most businesses need help to navigate complex rate schedules and complete necessary paperwork to secure the rate change.

“Many of our clients are told by their power company that they’re already on the best available rate. In many cases, that simply isn’t the case,” remarks Tony Millet, an Energy Advisor in Chesapeake, Virginia with Utility Management Services, Inc.

“We’re finding that 70% of businesses spending more than $1,500 monthly are being overcharged and can reduce their bill by securing a better rate” Millet said.

After discovering $5,646 in annual savings, ARC of the Virginia Peninsula Facilities Director, Bob Malloy said, “10% savings, that’s significant. And for a small organization, that’s a wake up call. Non-profits like us are being squeezed by higher costs.” The ARC assists people with mental retardation and other disabilities in choosing goals and leading satisfying lives.

“Four out of five commercial or industrial customers are over billed by the utility at some point.” according to Brian Coughlan, President of Utility Management Services, Inc. in Wilmington, NC.

“We look forward to saving money for a lot more businesses and strengthening the economy in the areas where we’re providing service.”
