Drawing in Fibre Virtual Exhibition Launched

Drawing in Fibre, a virtual exhibition exploring the influences and inspirations of
Scottish artist Anna King has been launched (7 December 2006) at
www.craftscotland.org

The exhibition is part of the craftfocus initiative which shows world class work by Scottish makers through curated online exhibitions with specially commissioned photography and editorial.

Anna, who is based in Edinburgh, creates constructed textiles, paper, tapestries and coiled forms. Her work is inspired by natural materials and the structure of the land, and the online exhibition includes two films where she demonstrates the
technique of making string from plant fibre and discusses how she is
experimenting with it to develop new work.

A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, she has had her own studio since 1988,
and has exhibited in the USA, Australia, Botswana, India and Japan, as well as Europe and the UK.

She was selected for this online craftfocus exhibition because of the new
collection of coiled forms she created for a solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2006. In this she took her concept of ‘containers for ideas and secrets’ a stage further making them completely closed as if trying to protect something very precious. This enclosure imposes a choice as the only way to find out what the form contains is to destroy it.

In 2007 she will hold a retrospective at the National Museum of Scotland and is participating in East Weaves West : Contemporary Basketmaking from Japan
and Britain at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow.

Drawing in Fibre is open 24/7 until March 2007 at www.craftscotland.org/craftfocus_annaking.html

Funded by the Scottish Arts Council, www.craftscotland.org promotes the best of Scottish craft through a searchable online directory of Scottish makers and crafts outlets, news, features, business advice, events and opportunity listings.
