Smart North Carolina Businesses Cash In On $25,876,343 Electric Bill Savings
(
PRLEAP.COM) (PRLEAP.COM) Wilmington, North Carolina – Utility Management Services, Inc. – To-date, North Carolina businesses have saved over $25,876,343 on their annual electric bills by being placed on more favorable rates with Progress Energy and Duke Energy. Savings range from 7%-23% of their annual bills and average $4,532 for the over 4,000 businesses audited.
Many businesses assume that their power provider is required by law to place them on the best rate. However, North Carolina’s two major power providers, Progress Energy and Duke Energy are NYSE-traded companies that must please stockholders as well.
Progress Energy’s terms and conditions clearly state that they cannot guarantee the customer will be served under the best rate. It also says that the responsibility for selecting the best rate ultimately falls on the customer.
Commercial/industrial accounts are placed on “one-size-fits-all” rates when activated. Most businesses don’t know about specialized rates that could save them money. This is where most overcharges occur.
Once informed, most businesses need help to navigate complex rate schedules and complete necessary paperwork to secure the rate change.
“Many of our clients are told by their power company that they’re already on the best available rate. In many cases, that simply isn’t the case,” remarks Tony Millet, an Energy Advisor with Utility Management Services, Inc.
“We’re finding that 70% of businesses spending more than $1,000 monthly are being overcharged and can reduce their bill by securing a better rate” Millet said.
After discovering significant overcharges, Carteret County Schools Finance Officer, Mr. Ipock said, “"Utility Management Services, Inc. provides our school system with a service our limited staff can not perform. Over the last several years they have saved Carteret County Schools money on utility bills and that equates to saving taxpayer’s dollars"
“Four out of five commercial or industrial customers are over billed by the utility at some point.” according to Brian Coughlan, President of Utility Management Services, Inc. in Wilmington, NC.
“We look forward to saving money for a lot more businesses and strengthening the economy in the areas where we’re providing service.”
