The New Law of the Middleware Jungle “Why Replace… When You Can Enhance?”

San Jose, CA – March 30, 2005 - When people hear “The Law of the Jungle” they often associate the idea of unrestrained, brutal and ferocious competition. Before the dot com bubble this was the credo of most software companies in the technology world. But as the dust settles and companies lick their wounds and re-emerge you’ll find a drastically different mentality. This new attitude couldn’t be more prevalent than it is with middleware vendors. Rather than take the position of kill or be killed, vendors are adopting a new strategic vision. The new law of the “middleware jungle” is that vendors are finding a common technological ground where they can highlight not only their technology’s distinctiveness but its collectivism as well. Creative Science Systems, an ISV that has produced a middleware suite of applications called NetZyme®, has found that its solution has the ability to act as one of these add-on middleware applications.

“The strength of a company’s future will hinge on this idea of middleware applications being able to co-exist and not draw lines in the sand. Some vendors will begin finding a niche as an add-on solution to major middleware applications,” points out Jacob Dreyband, CEO and President of Creative Science Systems. “These add-on applications will increase the functionality and performance of the middleware already present within the enterprise.”

The nature of NetZyme®’s integration on top of major middleware solutions is unobtrusive. This is possible because of the small client-side footprint of the solution and the open API which allows it to be easily plugged into software already present. The result is often an increase in performance without much additional strain on the overall environment. What this creates is a set of applications that act as a business solution for customers.

“We’ve encountered customers with an application that is robust Java the world. But with the recent surge of the Linux platform, they wanted to have the best of both worlds. The interoperability of our solution allowed them to have this and we were ale to do this quickly and cost effectively,” according to Mr. Dreyband.

This feature of any-to-any connectivity is a cost effective solution for the customer as well. A user will often find that they’ve purchased a middleware application to deal with an immediate need and in some cases haven’t anticipated future trends for enterprise applications. Sometimes this comes in the form of the purchased application lagging in innovation or an emerging platform that their application does not perform well on. Rather than undergo further development and integration to fix these problems a customer can find a middleware application that is easy to integrate, deploy and maintain while enhancing current software. A few companies that provide these types of add-on middleware applications, like Creative Science Systems, have partnered with major vendors to develop applications with low subscription prices.

“We foresaw this trend and were able to align our IT development accordingly. Every new version of NetZyme® we role out we test it on every major application server,” says Mr. Dreyband. “Our solutions have to not only have the ability to be a standalone engine but also they must be able to co-exist with the foreign technology or else it doesn’t make sense for the user. Our paramount objective is to enhance software not to replace it. We want NetZyme® to be an enzyme for a customer’s enterprise which results in pedal to the medal performance.”
