United Copper Industries First In Market to Meet Overseas Environmental Standard for Lead-Free Copper Wiring

Denton, Texas – December 30, 2006 – United Copper Industries of Denton, Texas has gone above current U.S. standards in producing the country's first supply of lead-free insulated wiring intended for commercial use in schools, public buildings, churches and in residential housing.

The company's visionary approach in the market came about as a result of engineers developing lead-free wiring products to meet RoHS standards. In July 2006, the European Union’s Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, prohibiting lead and several other substances from being used in the manufacturing of products shipped into or sold in Europe, went into effect. Not only did the European Union adopt such requirements, but the electronics market in Asia Pacific is now also moving to control the level of hazardous substances such as lead in products as well.

RoHS rules are slated to become law in China in March 2007. Without knowing if or when such directives could possibly follow in the United States, United Copper Industries had the foresight to introduce their new product line to customers now.

“While we do not currently have such a requirement in our country, with the technology available to bring our products to this higher standard, it made good sense to us as a business to offer wire that exceeds NEMA’s Phase One commitment in restricting the use of hazardous substances by July 1, 2010,” United Copper Industries Vice President Ronald Pritchett said.

"No one knows if such law will be enacted here, but we do know that several companies have begun to push for RoHS in the United States. Our customers who use the lead -free products will certainly be ahead of the game, in the event of such a change," Pritchett said.

"By offering these lead-free products we are creating long-term value for anyone developing a construction project. We are still delivering the high quality our customers have come to know and expect, while producing a product that sets a new environmental standard," Pritchett added.

United Copper Industries is a manufacturer of copper building wire solely committed to serving the electrical distribution market. The company manufactures 600 volt copper building wire used in both residential and commercial construction. All products are UL approved and listed.
