DALLAS, Texas – The Secret Society of Happy People (www.sohp.com) happily announces the Happiest Events and Moments of 2006:

10. The world continued a love affair with penguins as Happy Feet danced to the top of the box office.

9. Soccer fans in Angola, the Czech Republic, the Ivory Coast, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Ukraine were thrilled that their countries were in their first World Cup.

8. Whether or not you agree with her politics, U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is likely to become the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House.

7. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro broke a leg in the Preakness, but has recovered and will have a long career as a stud. His many fans were overjoyed the racehorse wasn’t put down.

6. Harvard and other universities begin teaching “Happiness 101” (Positive Psychology). Source: CBS News.

5. Football returned to New Orleans’ Superdome after the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina. And, the Saints won the NFC South!

4. Winnie the Pooh, who has delighted parents and children for eight decades, got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Silly old bear.

3. Peace won, at least in Pagosa Springs, Colo., where a couple fought to display a wreath shaped like a peace sign. Similar signs popped up all over the neighborhood after their homeowners association dropped its threat of fines.

2. The U.S. Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act ensures that in case of disaster, FEMA will also help evacuate pets, giving 63% of households, with a total of 358 million pets, a little peace of mind. Source: AP.
