TekTruth.com Debuts Just In Time For CES

WEST CHESTER, PA — The Next generation of consumer electronics and tech Web sites has been created with the formal launch of TekTruth.com, just in time for exciting coverage of the 40th annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Unlike most tech Web sites, TekTruth is created by editors with solid magazine publishing credentials, people who know how to inform — and entertain — readers. And because TekTruth is wholly supported by reader traffic, it can afford to be totally honest with its readers about emerging technologies and products without worrying about offending advertisers.

“Most tech magazines are in a tough spot,” said founder and editor in chief, Mike McGann. “They need ads from industry companies and no longer can afford to lose ad pages over a critical, but accurate product review. Unfortunately, and I speak from experience, the publishing business is a pretty scary place right now. Editors can’t afford to take chances at the risk of losing not just their jobs, but the jobs of their entire staffs. The result, unfortunately, is a very safe, product-by-committee, that sadly, isn’t very interesting.

“We aren’t shackled that way, either by the painful cost structure of publishing, or the need to keep advertisers happy,” McGann continued. “All we need to do is keep our readers happy — and hope they will want to share our site with their friends.”

One other major difference from both magazines and some of the big tech Web sites: accountability.

“Readers will be able to interact with writers, ask questions and even offer their input on products on our forums, where they can expect all of our writers to post and respond to questions,” McGann said. “The era of top-down journalism is over, now, it is more of a conversation and we’ve adapted to that.”

A long-time veteran of consumer electronics publishing, McGann served as Managing Editor of the trade magazine Dealerscope, before becoming Executive Editor of Home Theater magazine, Editor In Chief of E-Gear, and East Coast Editor of Home Entertainment. Following a brief political career, he helped found Gotham Sports Media and created and served as editor in chief of Gotham Baseball, which won Amazon.com’s award for Best New Sports Publication of 2005. After selling off his interest in GSM in mid-2006, McGann founded Brandywine New Media to create a network of affinity Web sites, including TekTruth.

“It’s exciting to be back writing about consumer electronics again, and the early response to TekTruth has been very exciting,” McGann said. “And while focusing as I did for a while on politics and sports was interesting, this seems like the perfect time to return to the tech field, with so many innovations on the near horizon.”
