Britons prefer Europe for cosmetic surgery

A survey by Cosmetic Surgery Answers (www.cosmeticsurgeryanswers.co.uk) has revealed that more than 70% of readers would choose Europe for surgery over more exotic destinations.

In the poll, readers voted Spain (44%) as their preferred destination, confirming the growing popularity of “Sun, Sea and Surgery” holidays. Eastern Europe, with 17% of the vote, has also become popular with UK citizens looking for surgery abroad. Cities such as Prague and Sofia now cater for hundreds of cosmetic tourists every year.

Belgium polled 9% , ahead of North Africa, where Tunisia and Morocco in particular are seeing a boom in tourism – particularly from the UK and France. Further flung destinations also fared well; the Far East is now firmly established as a centre for medical tourism, with Thailand and Malaysia well placed, and of course the USA is now cheaper than ever with a two dollar to the pound exchange rate. There are a huge number of cosmetic surgeons in the Florida region, which may well explain its popularity with the estimated one million UK tourists that visit its shores each year.

“Surgery abroad is becoming more and more popular” says Lynda Burgess, editor of Cosmetic Surgery Answers. “We have seen a massive increase in the number of UK consumers looking for good, independent advice about having a treatment overseas. They want a good deal, but increasingly, want to be sure that the procedure will be safe, and that the surgeon is reputable.”

It is estimated that some 25,000 Britons went overseas for cosmetic surgery in 2006.
