Dr. Barry Stevens addresses latest hair related issues & reveals shocking research findings linking hair disorders with diseases like HIV /AIDS!

Bangalore: Dr. Barry Stevens, the founder of Stevens Trichology Practices, UK while sharing the latest technological advances in Trichology, revealed that various research findings on the subject provided vital clues on hair disorders and its linkage to other diseases including HIV/AIDS. Further, he indicated that these interesting research findings had a great potential to revolutionize the entire Indian Trichology industry.

Dr. Barry Stevens who is in on a whirlwind tour of India also conducted training sessions with the doctors at Dr. Batra’s Positive Health Clinics as a part of the association between Stevens Trichology Practices, UK and India's leading name in homeopathic practices and research, designed to bring in world-class hair treatment to India.

Briefing media at Bangalore here today, Dr. Barry Stevens revealed that a correlation exists between hair loss and several diseases such as HIV/ AIDS. He mentioned that recent studies have shown that incidence of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis (a severe form of dandruff) among HIV patients is as high as 30%, as compared to a mere 3% amongst the general population and that Seborrhoeic Dermatitis on the ears is often a presenting feature of AIDS!

Similarly, Mr. Stevens elaborated on the link between hair loss and heart disease. Quoting a study conducted by Harvard Medical School, he stated that hair loss, particularly on the crown, indicated a threefold greater risk of heart disease in men. He also shared the discovery of the correlation between hair diameter and diabetes. Apparently the main hair diameters of IDDM (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) patients have been found to decrease 5 months prior to the onset of IDDM. Thus a sharp decrease in the hair diameter in high-risk individuals can prove useful in predicting the onset of IDDM.

A part of the study conducted in South India on medical and engineering students and manual laborers showed student groups had more body hair on an average than manual laborers.
Another unusual finding cited by Mr. Stevens is the relationship between dense body hair and intelligence. A study conducted by American psychiatrist, Dr Aikarakudy Alias over 22 years shows that the most intelligent and highly educated people have hairier chests than the general population. It further showed that hairier men got better grades. Discussing new technological advances in the field of trichology, Mr. Stevens said, “New techniques of hair follicle cloning will take trichology practices to a new level worldwide." He also added that "Our association with Dr. Batra's ® – the world's largest chain of homeopathy clinics will help bring the latest advancements in hair treatment through homeopathy to India. We look forward to add maximum value in the field of Trichology through this exclusive tie up."

Hair follicular cloning is a new technique of hair restoration where hair follicles are produced from the cells in dermal papilla. Baldness is caused when the cells in dermal papilla are destroyed due to disease, trauma and so on. In this new technique, the cells from the dermal papilla are surgically removed and subsequently cloned in a laboratory. Hundreds of these cloned cells are then injected into the balding area on the scalp. This technique of hair cloning is currently under experimentation and will arrive any where between 2009 and 2012. Adding to this, Dr. Ushma Batra, Vice President, DBPHCPL said, "Hair loss is a common complaint in clinical dermatology. Through our association with Stevens' Trichology Practices we endeavor to bring the best available treatment to our patients whose trust we have lived up to for over 25 years. This partnership will ensure that we remain abreast of the latest development in hair treatment from which our patients will benefit."

Deputy MD, DBPHCPL Dr. Akshay Batra who is the first Indian to qualify from the London Trichological Society as well as receive its prestigious Robert Olding Award said, "Trichology is the science of hair and progress in this field has led to diagnosis of various diseases through examination of hair related issues. The confluence of trichology with homeopathy will lead to a paradigm shift in clinical treatment and hair care, and will meet the challenge of taking specialised cost effective treatment to the masses with a personal touch."
