Brentwood County High School, Essex UK, Maths Week 2005

(PRLEAP.COM) STUDENTS at Brentwood County High School will soon be learning how to harness the power of mathematics to give them a winning edge in life.
Their maths teacher Suman Ghosh is an expert on statistics and probability and he will be sharing his secrets in a series of lectures developed with the help of world-renowned mathematician, writer and broadcaster Dr Simon Singh, author of The Code Book which offered readers a £10,000 prize for cracking a secret code.
Dr Singh says: "We live in a risk society one in which there are no surefire bets. But mathematics may be able to help us live longer, beat the dealer and predict the future."
He has loaned his computer-based presentation on probability which will be screened during the school’s Maths Week later this month and Mr Ghosh will be adding some of his own fascinating material to show students how to avoid being fooled by figures.
Mr Ghosh said: "I like to make maths interesting, useful and relevant to life. Statistics can be very misleading if you’re not careful."
To support his key messages, he will be examining a range of topics from statistics used to influence court juries to card games, gambling and game shows.
The school’s links with Dr Singh were established when Mr Ghosh attended a lecture on probabilty at the Royal Institute in London. As a result, Dr Singh loaned his World War II Enigma code machine for a workshop last year when students were exploring cryptology through the ages.
Now, he is lending his support to the first-ever Maths Week at the 1,400-pupil comprehensive to celebrate its status as a specialist maths, science and computing school.
During the week from April 25-29, students will learn one very important lesson - never play cards with the maths teacher because they will definitely lose. Mr Ghosh admits with a smile:"I can fix the cards so I always
win."
