Diverse kitchen designs, common priorities
(
PRLEAP.COM) Kitchen remodels have won a permanent place at the top of the list of preferred home improvement investments for the value and appeal that they add to a home. Three kitchen remodeling projects recently completed by members of the Kitchen & Bath Division design team at Case® Design/Remodeling, Inc. underscore the increasing importance — no matter the homeowners’ chosen design style — of effective, high-capacity storage solutions that work behind the scenes to marry aesthetic and practical priorities.
Today’s remodeled kitchen typically features an endless variety of specialized and general storage – in short, a place for everything. The possibilities abound, with popular features including:
· Slender profile drawers for pot lids, cutting boards
· Cookbook shelves to keep culinary inspiration within easy reach
· Slide-out vertical pantries for convenient stove-side access to ingredients
· Pull-out trash cans that hide away the mess
· Retractable towel racks to keep towels handy during food prep
· Wicker drawers for fruit and vegetables
· Glass-front pasta drawers for storage that makes a design statement.
While recent Case kitchen designs reflect the clients’ varying individual styles and preferences, they share many of these features, as well as a common priority of making the most of every inch of space with high-style storage solutions.
French accent
In a sunny, cheerful kitchen with French influences, Case designer Jill Hardy maximized storage and convenience by adding an island with a bar sink and second prep area in the middle of the space. The unique island also features an attached table with turned post legs to match the maple cabinetry and topped with granite to match the main island.
“The homeowners love to cook and to entertain, and preferred a ‘multiple cook’ kitchen,” says the designer, pointing out that storage was a priority from the outset of the project. “We added a number of pull-out features, tray dividers, appliance garages and other extra amenities which add to the functionality of the kitchen and are integrated into the design.”
The bright new kitchen features Crystal cabinetry, Franke Fireclay soapstone farm and prep sinks, and an overhead pot rack with carved detailing.

Neo-traditional elegance
In a project to remake a kitchen for another avid cook, Case designer April Case re-arranged the space to enhance both its functional and aesthetic appeal. Moving a doorway allowed for increased cabinet space, as did the creation of an island featuring both cabinet and wicker drawer storage and a cook top that completes the new ideal work triangle. A neo-classical design sensibility pervades the space, including details such as columns that frame the division between the kitchen and breakfast area and a handmade carved stone farmhouse sink that is as much a work of art as it is a practical amenity. Specialized storage keeps a full range of cooking tools close at hand, with most often used supplies concentrated in the work triangle.
Says the designer, “We opened up the entire area and improved the flow of the kitchen. The cook now has a space that puts everything at her fingertips as well as giving family and guests a beautiful space in which to gather.”

Sleek contemporary
The modernist sensibility of another Case client led to an elegant, streamlined solution with just as many storage solutions accommodated behind a sleek cherry cabinetry façade. The addition of an L-shaped island added sought-after space for cabinets and created a unifying element between the kitchen, dining room and an adjacent sunroom. A monochromatic palette gives the space a deceptive visual simplicity, cleverly concealing an endless array of space-maximizing storage compartments. From a pull-out trash can and a tilt-down sink tray to cutlery trays and an integral spice rack, a multitude of compartments provide for storage in every nook and cranny of the space.
“The client asked us to give them a functional kitchen that would blend with the contemporary style of the rest of their home,” said Case designer Nicole Zeigler, who added distinctive details such as Centiva vinyl flooring and an iridescent glass backsplash border. “The new plan creates a more efficient work triangle, provides additional countertop space, adds a variety of storage and integrates the kitchen with the dining room and adjacent sunroom.”
